Why did canon drop 580ex ii from their Speedlite Flash Lineup?

Canon has completely replaced the 580ex II with the 600EX-RT
Was canon have too many problems with the 580ex II? The reason I am asking this is one of our 580ex II's stopped working in a recent wedding. The display works fine, but the unit will not fire. I am aware of the heat issue, so I don't take multiple shots. We have enjoyed using this flash. Of course, the 580ex II is just past the warranty period.
Anyone else had this problem?
