is the d7000 an old camera?

Of course, but for a non-professional photographer shooting for pleasure as a hobby, any future camera is not going to give you anything that will make much of a difference from the current D7000.

I still have the antique D80, and apart from sometimes being limited in cropping because of having "only" 10MP, it still works fine for my purposes.  The D300s being as low as $1250 in Canada is certainly tempting, though!
