I thought people posted that the ability to disable the Metro Screen was removed in the production version of Windows 8. So that is wrong? And it can be disabled in the release version?

If that is the case then it would be trivial for Microsoft to release a patch letting users do this in a simple straight-forward way. Of course that does not mean that they would do so ...
