Normally the RAW->JPEG conversion is linear. But ... if you set the D-Range highlight expansion then the conversion curve gets slightly rounded off at highlight, thus getting you one more stop of dynamic range in the highlights. But there are no free lunch. To be able to fit that extra dynamic range you have to expose less. And thats what you do if you set a higher ISO.
