What non-inkjet papers can I use?

Hi,

I'm wanting to get started printing my pictures. I had a lot of fun printing on to cartridge paper and card until my printer died earlier this year. I really liked the textures and bloom this gave me. I understand this is not a recommended technique, what are the drawbacks?

And what is a good starter printer to get going again? Is it worth going for a more expensive pigment printer, or sticking with dye for now?
