I did a series of tests with the 70-200mm f2.8 on a D300 and a D3, both 12MP cameras with one DX and the other FX. Comparing the results I was surprised to see how much detail was lost with the D300 as there was more of a compression effect with the greater pixel density and smaller photosites. Regardless of the technical reasons it became crystal clear that for maximum IQ regardless of the lens the FX D3 was the camera to use.

Using different lenses the test would have been a lens and not a camera comparison. There is no way that pictures taken with any DX wide angle zoom are going to be anywhere close to the IQ of the 14-24mm f2.8 zoom.
