First "real" camera

I am just about to purchase my first "real camera" (entry level DSLR) and have been looking extensively at this site. Its a jungle out there quite frankly. I don't know yet where my passion will lie so just need something versatile and above all user friendly. The Nikon 3100 has been suggested to me. Can anyone help???
