Hi Russ!

Well I did mention the Nikon P7000/7100 at the end and did say too that it doesn't end at the G line. However I believe that a shooter just learning should have a finder of some sort built into the camera, whether that be an optical or electronic one (optical and evf promote learning in different ways, but both promote proper learning skills I think).

The Fuji X10 is now- after that sensor and firmware bug fiasco- a great alternative too if you can get along with its odd menu system and fussy quirks. It has the best OVF of the three mentioned so far, and a great lens and image quality too.

I just figured since I was on the Canon forum I'd discuss mainly the G series cameras. I could duplicate the post on the coolpix forum for the Nikon crowd, and too with the Fuji crowd for the X10. But... time is always an issue for me lol.

Like you I believe that Canon still has the best all round enthusiast compact w/a finder out there, despite the advantages of the competitors.

Just know that I'm brand agnostic. Whoever makes the best camera for my needs wins, and I'm well aware of my needs (not to be confused with picky). I just happen to really like the G series cameras, they are so well rounded and a pleasure to use with great performance to boot. Striking such a well balanced product seems to be very difficult for Canon's competitors.

Cheers!

Carl
