Can someone please help me use the TTL on the D7000

This is too complicated for my blood. I have a Vivitar DF-583 and D7000. All I want to do is set the flash up so I'm getting just the vivitar mounted on a tripod. But I can't figure it out. I have the vivitar in TTL mode. There's not much else to set other than a power range on the vivitar TTL. On the Nikon I don't know what commander settings I have to use to make this work. The documentation is absolutely useless.

Please help before I throw this piece of junk against the wall
