Don't 2010 iMacs have optical drive bays that can take an SSD mount?
IIRC, some iMacs from that general era were even rumored to even have an unused second internal drive bay. No doubt Apple won't get involved in either but as long as there is a decent screwed on to glued down ratio (unlike the current crop) it should be not such a big deal.
At the very least let Apple replace your 1 gig recalled drive and when you get it back take it out and put it in an enclosure. Add internal SSD to taste.
