For the D5100, you need to use the 50mm AF-S lens, NOT the "D" lens. And it is the D lens you will find at around $100 or so. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8 is $200 new and can usually be found for $150-$180 used. The nice thing about going with the 35mm lens is that it isn't that much of a crop to get the same FoV as what the 50mm would have given you. But you can't make the 50mm look like the 35mm no matter what you do!
