This is the same for every single product you own. Maximize profit based on what people are willing to pay vs how many a company can sell. It is called capitalism. It works like this. If you don't buy the Sony 35mm f/1.8 it makes little difference to Sony. If enough people don't buy it because of the price Sony will lower the price.

Sony keeps raising the prices because people are willing to pay for it.
