In my opinion, any "wow effect” attributable to the lens would most likely be the result of a flaw.  A good lens should simply record the scene accurately.

A fisheye, for example, gets its “wow” by taking advantage of linear distortion.  And fast lenses that are known for “creamy” portraits often suffer from excessive coma.

That said, most “wow” photos that I’ve seen are the result of good technique and knowing how to use light to best advantage, not the lens that was used.  I don't think it's posible to simply purchase a particular lens and suddenly transform otherwise bad photos into good.
