teleconverters or digital zooming to get extra reach?
Dec 4, 2012

I was into getting a 3rd party teleconverter (attached from the rear, not add-on) for my telephoto lens for some extra reach. However I was wondering if digital zooming/cropping would save me the money and weight without much of a difference in image quality?

I use a Sony interchangeable lens camera, and lately there's this new function called clear digital zoom that basically adds amount of pixels back to the original amount on your sensor. I know most hobbyists don't care about pixels, and this function is pretty gimmecky & can be done in post processing but here's what I've concluded so far:

if I were to use say a 1.5x 3rd party teleconverter on a 300mm F4 lens, I would

1. basically have a 450mm F5.6 lens

2. loss in some optical quality since it's not one of those original manufacturer teleconverters that are lens specific

3. spend some money, add some weight

if I were to perform 1.5x clear digital zoom on a 300mm F4 lens, I would

1. have a 450mmm F5.6 depth of field equivalent lens, but no loss in light since there's no addition in actual glass?

2. loss in some optical quality since I'm magnifying the lens's optical performance

3. no money spent, not weight added

Is my strain of though correct? If so would it be better to just stick with digital zooming instead?

FYI: I emphasize 3rd party because I assume there is less/no loss in optical quality from original manufacturer ones (but are more expensive and are limited in terms of the # of lens that can be used)

Thanks!
