No, I'm not a fan of F4 glass, especially when it's expensive, which it usually is. This is true.

And to be 100% clear I DO think the 70-200 VRII (which I own) is a DUD because at closer focusing it does not come NEAR 200mm. You pay a lot for optical edges over the VR1 only to end up with a 140mm-160mm lens at some VERY common portrait distances. Even closer range sports....sidelines or ringsides...are effected.

IF the new 70-200 F4 does suffer from this issue I'd be curious to know WHY. Canon's new 70-200 does not. Until recently I had the 5DII and that lens beat Nikon's version and held most of it's reach at closer distances.

Nikon's 70-200 entries need work. The 70-200 VR1 had issues with FX (For some). The 70-200 VRII is optically superb (But breathes like a 18-200vr!) and my main issue with the latest lens is the value factor as it is with the 24-120vr F4.

If the 70-200 F4 lens does not breath badly that would be nice and it would elevate it's value.

Those are my thoughts. This is a discussion on lenses, so let's not allow it to devolve into something personal. I have friends who HATE zooms and I mean all zooms. They're entitled to their choices and I respect their very supportable views.

Cheers,

Robert
