How many leave the Big Dog (D700/D800) at home while traveling and take a smaller camera instead?

This topic even though it has been discussed a couple of times always amazes me again and again.

Photogs owning the D800 (one of the best DSLRs actually on the market) seriously consider taking a smaller camera on vacation. If going to a beautiful location is not the ultimate reason to bring your best gear ... then what is it ? Uncle Bens 85th birthday or aunt Jennys 50th anniversary ?

Even more funny is the "striking" logic behind it. If a Panny GH3 or P7700 is good enough to capture the best and most precious moments during your ($5000 ?) vacation why suddenly you need a D800 on your annual BBQ ? In other words a $500 RX100 in JPG mode is good enough for the Brazilian rainforest and its great birds but on your BBQ party you need 14bit RAW and a $1600 f2.8 lens ?

No intention to offend just curious what's the logic behind.
