Canon EOS-M vs Olympus OM-D EM-5 Speed Test

There is a Canon EOS-M vs Olympus OM-D EM-5 Speed Test link to the video on the 43rds Rumor site.  The speed diverentials are very clear.  I expect Canon to have a major improvement in the next APS-C sensor.  Hopefully the new sensor will be able to siginificantly increase live view speed for the APS-C dSLRs (700D and 7D MK II as well as the new EOS-M body that are rumored to be coming).

It is great that Canon has come out with hybrid sensors (as has Sony) combining Phase Detect with Contrast Detect.  I don't understand the engineering and algorithms needed to make speed work.  I would appreciate if anyone out there can explain it in layman's terms.
