Exactly what I do when I don't want to take the 500 f4.

Looks like we agree on that. While it keeps working and does the job I'll keep using my Canon 400mm f4. One of my friends uses the 300mm f2.8 with 1.7x and 2x TCs, on a D300 and getting very nice results.

For the OP, a secondhand 300mm f2.8 with D800 would be the least costly way to go while staying with Nikon.

That is indeed good to know....I already have the AF-I 300mm 2.8 (the VR version ain't gonna happen)......

I need to think about the D800......but I am currently leaning towards waiting for Nikon to come out with the D400 (or whatever the next D300 upgrade is).
