When I first started learning seriously about photography, the game was to get the greatest possible DOF. I then had a full frame SLR, a Yashika TL Super which was OK but its lenses were not the best. So I went into half frame which allowed me to get twice as many photos on a film, but, especially, greatly increased the DOF.
In those days one would take landscape photos and include a nice foreground in order to get a good sense of depth, and sometimes, on a lucky day, these photos were almost 3D.
I'm glad that I went into the Nikon 1 system because I now get the best of having good lenses in a small size and light weight, and the advantages of half frame
