Newbie question here. I don't mind cropping during PP, I just want to make full use of my LX7 sensor with as little loss of info as possible. Does anyone know what the optimal aspect ratio is to maximize use of all the real estate on the LX7 sensor?
The review says LX7 sensor has max resolution of 3648 x 2736 (which comes out to 4 to 3 ratio of width to height). Does that mean that shooting in 4:3 is optimal if I don't want to crop my field of view until post processing?
Well, 4:3 does use the most pixels since it is the tallest aspect ratio but with the oversized sensor the way Panasonic uses it 24mm on the horizontal plane being the minimum in 4:3 actually widens in 16:9 to somewhere around 21mm but considerably more is lost in the vertical plane although if you view the diagram of the oversized sensor (available in the Lx3 reiew on this site) you'll see that the loss of pixels is kept to a minimum compared to cropping the sensor like it's done in cams without an oversized sensor... In the Lx2 that had a true 16:9 aspect ratio sensor, when it was cropped to 3:2 & 4:3 its widest focal length on the horizontal plane was cut considerably since it did not have the oversized\multi-aspect ratio sensor.. FZ's also lose similarly on the vertical plane when its native 4:3 sensor is cropped to acheive the other aspect ratios... 1:1 loses the most (horizontally) no matter what the sensor is natively...
