I found myself in a similar situation a few weeks ago and purchased a Canon 9000f which I'm using for my family's vast negative collection.
I like it so far and it has a lot of different options in terms of resolution. I do think that for my purposes the 9600 dpi is way more than I need (ipad/computer monitor viewing and standard prints) so I've been playing around with the resolution settings quite a bit.
Not to mention the fact that using the maximum resolution seems to take forever. I'm still working on finding a good balance of quality versus amount of time spent per image.
