Photo and slide archiving

Is there a product you like to use to achieve this? I have seen some on sale as low as 50.00. I just can't believe some of them are that good and would rather spend a little more for a quality machine if that is what I need. I have many old photographs and even more slides I would like to convert to digital images someday and perhaps make some prints out of eventually. Thanks for the help.
