I always take a 4:3 to get the maximum resolution. You can always crop to any format you want afterwards. If you use the internal cropping, you can't go back for those missing pixels.

The sensor in the LX7 (and LX3/5) uses different areas of the sensor for the different aspect ratios. For example, a 16:9 isn't a cropped 4:3 as 16:9 uses more of the sensor on the sides but less on the top relative to 4:3.

The LX7 review has an interactive graphic that shows the sensor area being used in the different  aspect ratios.  It's about two pages down from the top of that link.
