I agree, these are excellent.

They are good examples of what can be accomplished in a small space without too much height. As you mentioned the light is hard. A little too hard I think. Single source lighting limits your options. Even with reflectors and flags.  Softening the background shadows would also be a benefit. Not that you have to go all Hollywood but a little softer would improve the look I think.
