Sharpness is one thing, fine detail is another. Different cameras apply different amounts of sharpening. Sharpen your S100 images a bit and see if you get the same (or more) fine detail as you from your S85. I'm not saying you will, just that it would be worth trying.

Here are a few images taken (jpeg and raw) at about 28mm @ f/2.8 iso80. RAW conversions done on LR 3.6. It seems like the s95 produces sharper or a bit more detail, and not only at the corners.
