Problem solved in the following way:

Plug in G 12 into USB drive and turn camera on. Go to "Devices and Printers" and make certain the G 12 icon appears as a device. Right-click "troubleshoot."

Ultimately, the solution resides in a missing driver for the G12. Let Windows 7 fix the problem and the camera will be detected. This solution works with any Canon (or other make) camera model. Just repeat the steps above making sure the camera icon appears in Devices and Printers then have Windows install the required driver (watch your taskbar). Solving this problem makes it possible to access the camera in other programs such as Adobe Bridge, etc. Hope it works for you.
