Nikon put itself in an odd position, indeed.

I think Nikon offers other features which make up for the difference, like better AF.

Since Nikon is very carefully watching what Canon is doing I will not be surprised if next D600 firmware update will have one-button-press 100% zoom functionality enabled.

I see your POV but IMO it's the exact opposite: it would be very much out of character for Nikon to offer key features in its firmware updates. Nikon usually limits the updates to bug fixes or minor improvements.

I am not privy to Nikon's marketing decisions. Whatever I say about Nikon strategy is a pure speculation on my part. But from what I read in this forum and elsewhere makes me think that Nikon's strategy has been to wrestle market share away from Canon. And both D800 and D600 were introduced with this aim in sight. Unfortunately, both were a mixed success

Where do you get that information from? The D800 was selling like hot cakes for months and months after launch, only recently has the price fallen. The D600 was priced too high for what it is, I think almost everyone agrees with that.

I have been reading Thom Hogan too much lately Where did you get your D800 sales numbers from?

It was selling at the MRSP for a long while, and they only do that when demand outstrips supply. And we know Nikon's figures for what they were hoping to sell were not modest.

I has been checking D800 sales rank on Amazon since August and they were not great (compared to Canon 5Dm3). B&H has had D800E back-ordered for very long time (supply issue) but D800 was in stock. Again, I have no factual sales data. If you have some reliable sources, by all means, share whatever information you can. But in all likelihood we have to wait until Nikon's EOY financial report comes out to get some hard info.
