Canon S95

If small size is a high priority then look at Canon S95. It has the 1/1.7 sensor and the lens starts at f2. Also it is easily the smallest out of the four last generation "premium compacts" based on 1/1.7 sensors including Panasonic LX5, Olympus XZ-1 and Samsung EX-1 (also called Samsung TL500). Of course it sacrifices lens speed at long end to achieve its small dimensions but if you want a truly pocketable camera then it has to be S95 out of all these four. Plus it is generally a well-rounded camera with no quirks.

S95 is what I had before my RX100. RX100 is my P&S of choice now but it is beyond the price range that you have set. All of the above 4 compacts are available at bargain prices in the used market at much less than your $300 budget.
