The Bayers have their uses. They work well in low light, when no one expects much detail anyway, and they are great for that old fashioned "dreamy" or "gauzy" (blurry) portrait image look.
To compensate the manufacturers have concentrated on features: You can know where you are and call for help using your camera.
But really, the DPR set-up favors the established technology, and works against innovators, such as Sigma and Fuji. It also favors general use cameras, and not so much specialized cameras. Which makes sense from the perspective of DPR, since it is is pretty much a site for the masses, who buy and are content with the major brands.
