Exactly, and when you take into account that the vast majority of DX sales are of the entry level models and that those sales largely driven by the low price, it makes no sense to make Expensive pro DX glass either as most people on DX will never buy it. The tiny number of sports/bird shooters who insist on using DX for the crop factor wont be enough of a market for either a D300 replacement or Pro DX glass. Beside a D7000 type body with a little larger buffer, 24mp, 39 or 51 AF points, and 8fps will be plenty of camera for that use anyway.

Is it so hard to understand that long reach action shooters value the larger buffer, the higher-end AF system, the additional fps, the extra pixel density/reach of the D300 DX sensor and the pro-level ergonomics (in particularly, the ergonomics of the AF-ON button for me). Heck, I'd pay a LOT more for that.

You DON'T need an D300 specced or priced body to get that. You could have all the ergos you want, AF and 8 fps stuffed in a D7000 priced body. Another button or two won't change much.

I know many people who dumped D300's for 7000s as it is.

A D600 is, plain and simple, just not optimized for long reach action. It's a compromise camera in pretty much all respects. If you're looking for the lowest cost way to get into FX, it's a perfect compromise for you. But, if you don't want to compromise buffer, AF, fps or reach, it's a very bad choice.

But its a fine choice and an all rounder. Problem for Nikon now is making a high priced DX camera that is close to a low priced FX one. Some will buy it but the issue is how MANY.

Canon compromised the 6D a LOT more to keep sales of the 7D alive.

Exactly.  Things like an AF on button while nice are not deal breakers for most people.  For practical purposes a D7000 type body with enough fps and at least the 39 point AF will work just fine for any type of shooting where the DX sensor is an advantage.  It is a vocal minority who insist on a full D300 style body and it has more to do with not wanting to lose the feeling of being at a higher status using a "pro" body gives them.
