You mentioned from and IQ standpoint the OMD EM-5 and GH3 are pretty close suggesting that the GH3 is the one to get if you need video and ergonomics and the OMD for size I suppose. I have the GH2 and find the size fine. That said, there are moments I find the GH2 a bit too large (when i'm using it as a casual camera if we were to go out to dinner). Is the GH3 that much larger that it becomes conspicuous to the subject? I've heard that at sporting events/concerts that smaller cameras get through but DSLR don't.

I've really thought of going OMD but find it a bit uncomfortable in my hands and functionality seems a bit buried in menus. But I also recognize how easy it would be to throw it in my work bag (I do that with the GH2 but it bulks it up a bit).

I recognize that I'm nitpicking here as a d600 in my hands was a deal breaker with the lenses and forget the D800. My gh3 is ready to pick up at my local store and I was wondering what your thoughts are before I head out there later today (I'll play around with both OMD/GH3 and the XE1 before deciding but more info is better in my view).

The GH3 is a large, solid camera. I probably wouldn't take it to dinner, I confess. If door staff had their eye out for DSLRs, I imagine the GH3 could be at risk.

Have you tried the E-M5 with the grip? It definitely isn't perfect, but does seriously improve the ergonomics. Why don't you ask to try out the GH3 vs the E-M5?

I haven't been able to try the EM5 with a grip.  Only the EM5.  I do love the size but without the grip it seems like it isn't a camera you can just hold all day with one hand (which I can do with the GH2 and a lot of times I can take one handed photos or rather I'm forced to with a child).  I do like the IQ of the EM5 and the AF.  I don't like having less buttons and wish it was a swivel LCD.  Love the IBIS on the video but hate the inflexibility of the video itself.  That to me is the deal breaker.  Perhaps I'll just get the GH3 and if Olympus does improve the OMD I'll go that route and sell the GH3.  Thanks.

I don't have an issue with the GH2 size and will take it to dinner at times.  I do wish it was smaller though as I believe an OMD with a pancake lens would theoretically fit in a jacket pocket.
