Low Light Settings for Nikon S8200

I recently purchased the Nikon S8200 to replace my old p&s. I really wanted to be able to get decent low light pictures. I am not talking pitch black, but poorly lit room, etc. So far, the pictures are a little darker, grainier or overprocessed than I would like. Any suggestions on how to get better pictures in low light? Someone mentioned to turn of the VR. Would that help?
