Does f-stop stay constant on new 24-70mm vII?

I've heard that the new 24-70mm doesn't stay a continuous f2.8 throughout its zoom range? Does anyone know if this is true or false? Any owners out there notice the LCD display change to f3.5 or f4 when you zoom to 70mm?
I was told this by a rental house that has the lens and if true would be a deal-breaker for me.
Anyone? Thanks!
