Why is it difficult to fit a full-frame sensor into a compact digicam? [They've done it for film.]

It's true. The zoom versions were pretty bad.... not wide aperture, not much zoom range, and, with some notable exceptions, not particularly sharp, either...

... and the reasons full frame 35mm film was used because it was cheap, (which full frame sensors are most definately not)...

... and there was lots of very cheap dev-&-print facilities around back then.... (no more)... which increased the market size.
