I agree with you. It doesn't make sense for them to announce the d7100 first, unless the d400 just isn't anywhere near ready for launch. A lot of d300 buyers would likely give up on waiting for the d400, if the d7100 looked "good enough". Hell, if it has the new Cam 3500, I might buy one instead of waiting too...
And, as long as the D400 was ready, they would sell more of them if they announced it before the D7100, just like with the D800/D600 which would generate more profits. So, the only reason I could see the D400 not coming first if it wasn't ready (problems with low noise at 8fps at 24MP perhaps) or if they felt some competitive problem that compelled them a different direction. From the pure maximizing profit point of view, I'd sure think the D400 should go first.
Yes, I think that you're right on target with that, John. Only Nikon knows whether or not the d400 is ready for prime time. If they are having issues with something on the camera, I'd much rather wait than have them rush it out the door with problems.
Given their recent QC issues with the FX cameras, I am not so inclined to be a first adopter, as has always been my habit in the past. I had a lot of faith in them. I ordered the d200, d300 and d700 as soon as someone would take the order and never worried about the cameras having issues. I dunno if I want to do that with the d400. On one hand, I'm thinking that Nikon has learned from the FX problems. OTOH, I'm wondering if that stuff ever gets past their firewalls. They sure don't seem to care much about what their customers think....
