I keep getting prospective D800 buyers contacting me on flickr asking 'do I really need to use a tripod with this camera?', 'I hear you can't use it handheld?'....

I just want to get the facts right for anyone looking to buy a D800. It is complete nonsense. I'm not sure of the origin

The origin is that if you want to get the full potential the D800 has to offer over say a D700, then you need to use a tripod. Have you compared handheld shots taken with the D800 and D700 (same shot, same lens, and all that jazz)? I bet you can't tell the difference in large prints even though you would have expected the D800 to do better.

This 'need to use a tripod stuff' remains silly.

It's only silly when taken out of context.  Fact is, you often (but not always) need to use a tripod to get maximum resolution from lower pixel density cameras such as the D700; therefore yes, with a D800 the threshold for either optimum or maximum resolution increases by 70% of a stop compared to the D700 if you are printing each at their largest acceptable size ("acceptable" also being a point of contention).  Frankly, I'm not buying what is implicit in the OP's argument here, that he is getting more from the D800 than he could from the D700 at 1/30s, and the arguments you offered was about shutter speeds in the neighborhood of 10x as fast which suggests you aren't going to argue that either.
