Hmmm

Here's the comparison for f5.6 between the two, and they are very close.  One thing I learned at The Digital Picture is that the 70-300 DOES take the canon extenders, so you can get 600mm from the 70-300.  That's a plus, though at f11, and looking pretty soft.  It's not a listed lens on the B and H compatibility chart, but maybe it's too new to have made the list.
