I recently traveled in Borneo with the NEX-7 and Sigma 19mm f/2.8 + 18-200. I chose the Sirui T-1205X:

It's lightweight, affordable and excellent build quality. Gorillapods are an acceptable compomise in certain situations, but with a proper tripod you can hang your bag from the center column and do serious work with a very solid platform- even at the best of times, gorillapods are a little wobbly.

If you couple it with a simple ball head you can easily come in around a kilogram total weight; my complete camera kit was under 2kg with body and lenses, and it gave me all the tools I needed.

+1 for the Sirui T-1205X.  Vrey lightweight and folds down to 12-13in, which should fit nicely in a backpack.  Hanging a bag on the center column hook definitely adds to the stability.

A monopod would work well also for backpacking.  The Velbon Ultra Stick M50 is awesome.
