Canon mg8220: Good enough for photos?

Hi all,

We're contemplating a new printer. Of course I want to drop a grand on a Canon Pro-1 or some such but that's not going to happen; $400 is the ceiling. Given that we've kids printing homework and reports quite a bit, and that multifunction does have some appeal, I'm drawn to the MG8220, but wonder if it's going to give the photographic results I'm after.

I was rather surprised at how difficult it was to find good photo-centric reviews of recent printers, so please pardon if this is a FAQ! Perhaps my Google Fu is lacking. Can anyone report personal experience, or point me to a review on a photography site that would answer my question?

If you care to recommend alternatives, I'm going to be printing primarily color photos but do some B&W as well, middle of the road for speed is fine, photo quality more important than interface gewgaws, medium-format would be nice but I can settle for 8.5x11 and continue taking the bigger stuff to the local photo store if I have to.

TIA!
