What about purchasing a used copy of CS3/4/5 Standard or Extended?

Either Standard or Extended is fine unless you care about 3D, the Extended version *just* adds 3D capabilities !)

I don't know, but I would assume that in future, this would qualify you to purchase any future updates such as from CS3/4/5 to CS6 (now) or CS7 (later) just like the original owner.

I want to buy: Upgrade
I own: Photoshop CS3
Platform: Windows
Delivery: Download
Quantity: 1

US $199.00

Then there's the subscription plans:
  1. One-Year            $239.88 = ( 12 * $19.99)
  2. Month-to-month  $359.40 = ( 12 * $29.99)

To summarize your options are:

  1. You can *probably* get into CS6 for under $700
    by buying a used CS3/4/5 or CS3E/4E/5E for $xxx
then upgrade it for $200 [see below]
  2. You *can* get into CS6 for much less by subscribing to a plan
    One-Year            $239.88 = (12 * $19.99)
    Month-to-month $359.40 = (12 * $29.99)
  3. You *can* buy a used CS5 or CS5E for $xxx then upgrade for
    $200 or
$400 (To Extended, from Standard or Extended) somewhat at your leisure.
[CS5 or CS5E will provide you with very good advanced features, works well with 64bit OSs, and GPUs]

There are several things to consider, namely

  • What you budget allows
  • What features you need versus want
  • Whether you *ever* plan on getting current with Photoshop
  • What size in (in MP) your images are
  • What does/will hardware support

I suggest that you could be happy with used version of CS5 or CS5E.

It would be the best return for your money and allow future upgrades.

The link below will help with the feature differences between CS versions, CS5 and CS6 are the what you should focus on.
