One more thing to keep in mind: for best results, especially at a wide-angle focal length, a bracket like Bert shows in his photo allows you to set up the camera to rotate around the "no parallax point" (also called nodal point, and exit pupil (or is it entrance pupil?) so near and far objects in the scene don't shift relative to each other. The longer the focal length, the less critical this becomes. So you really want a bracket that allows portrait orientation to get maximum resolution in the images, and the ability to shift forward-backward around the point of rotation to eliminate parallax.
Clearly, sweep panorama does a great job for quick-and-dirty pans, and it's possible to shortcut the ideal setup and get useful results. But if you're interested in high-quality (especially interior) panoramas, you'll find a wealth of tutorials around the web.
