I just got this assesment from Olympus repair:

TRIPOD SOCKET TORE OUT. EXTREME DAMAGE TO CAMERA DUE TO IMPACT WARRANTY VOID

Well obviously the warranty is void sincce I bought it used. They do specify "impact damage" rather than overtightening, which gives me hope the camera can actually be used without a QR plate, since I have never created an impact on it. Assuming of course that they differentiate between "overtightening" and "impact." Repair price is $184 which is more than I prefer but far cheaper than I expected.

I'd imagine "impact" would be fodder for dispute among attorneys, for more than just a few billable hours.   The out of warranty cost indeed is cheaper than I'd expect.  Could've been worse (granted, let's see what's returned before judgement is applied).
