Thanks for your thoughts.  To confirm a few details..

Photo - no spitting on lens but good guess

Do I need 36MP of the D800 - Nope.  I actually now prefer to shoot film as prefer the less perfect/ arty/ grain look so use a Contax 645 + Pentacon Six.  I bought the D800 originally to shoot video.  The D700 is still a great camera and I use  as backup for weddings.

Tripods/ studios - I agree the traditional studio shooter will probably shoot at f11+ on a white screen with every pore in focus.  Personally I find this very dull and refuse models asking for white screen work.  I prefer location shoots and fast lenses wide open.  That is by the by.  My new love of film has made me realise everything doesn't need to be pin sharp ( for my taste) so now I shoot my D800 to get less perfect more creative images.  For this reason I do not need a tripod yet I can get eyes pin sharp if that's the look I want.

Tripods/ Landscape - agree tripods are a great help/ must.

Cheers
