Re: Would you buy an X100 now?

I don't think it would be a bad decision, but as I just went through the process I know it wouldn't be the right one for me.
I spent the last two weeks agonizing over the X100 vs. X-E1 question and without a ready answer just went to a shop to touch and compare. It took me 5 minutes to figure out, the X-E1 was the one for me.
From what I've seen so far, the IQ isn't worlds apart with a slide advantage for the newer X-E1 - if you shoot JPEGs that is. I think you can push the X100's RAWs further than the X-E1 files. Mind you after 3 days of ownership and limited shooting time, this is only an initial thought. My LR4 workflow doesn't do the files justice introducing too many quibbles. Maybe with some practise it’ll get better…
Either way, what made me choose the X-E1 was:
- although heavier, for me it handles much better than the X100. I always had a problem with the X100 grip and lack of thumb rest on the back, it didn’t feel 100% right. The X-E1 does. YMMV!
- the EVF is just in another league. As much as I like the X100 OVF, I would probably use the electronic one for the best part of my shooting and the difference is huge - although the X-E1 implementation isn't perfect by any means.
- the Q button. I wouldn't necessarily say it makes adjustments instant but it's quicker and more intuitive in most regards compared to the menu diving on the X100.
- after shooting over a year with a Leica X1, I know the 23mm equivalent is my favourite focal length but for 80% of my shots only. I don't see a need for more than one camera, I'm not a pro, and I surely would like to get the remaining 20% shots the way I like it. The prime aspect made me fall in love with the X1 but with time it also made me to ditch it L With the X-E1 I will have all the choices I need/want, according to the roadmap.
And this brings me to the last point…
- future prospects. As I already stated, I love the 35mm equivalent. And I would surely love a F1.4 more than a F2, all else equal. With the X-E1 I can get it according to Fuji's roadmap. With the X100... well that would be a hell of a firmware update if Fuji pooled it off
Your preferences might differ form mine, as probably do your priorities. But still, I hope this helps!
P.S. if you're missing the AF comparo: the X100 they had in the shop was probably on a very early firmware, as it needed longer to focus on one subject than the X-E1 needed to get two to three perfectly sharp shots on varying distances. So I’m probably not the best person to comment on the subject.
Good luck with your choice,
Mike
