How do I determine amount of Shutter "Clicks" in EOS D* cameras?

I am trying to purchase a used EOS 50 D and want trying to gauge the the relative usage of prospective 50Ds by determining the total amount of shutter actuations. Someone told me I need to use some type of software to interrogate the camera. Is this true??
