a reviewer on one website said something about their not being focus or zoom "inside the lens" on the 55-250mm compared to the 70-300mm.

As was mentioned, that's in reference to the 70-300L lens ($1300).

Can someone explain? What's the difference between the two lenses?

In reference to the 70-300 non-L ($500) vs the 55-250 ($200), by all accounts there isn't a significant difference. Both will work equally well for your application IMHO. I'd save the $300 for something else.

Another choice in that upper price range that you might consider would be the excellent 70-200 f4L IS ($629), since you'll be on a tripod shooting remotely.

Thank you R2, forgive my dumbness, but isn't there a better reach with the 300mm IS vs the 200mm f4L IS USM? I shoot from inside my window to outside a lot too, and I really can't reach close enough to one of my bird feeders already. Wouldn't the 200mm be even shorter? Like I said, I really need education with lenses and the terminology.

Thanks!!
