I suggest you consider a 1D3 or 1D4. The 5D3 is, by all accounts, a great camera. But, you might prefer the faster frame rate, bullet-proof build quality, 1.3x reach, and less gargantuan RAW file size. Unless you're routinely making exhibition-quality prints larger than 12"x18", anything over 16MP is overkill. And, a used 1D3 in good condition can be had for a song. That'll save you some money for a 24-70 f2.8L or some fast primes.

I routinely make 16"x24" prints from clean 10MP files and am skeptical about the megapixel race. I have a 1D3 & 1Ds3. The 1D3 is my go-to camera for low-light event work where I know I won't be making huge prints. Yes, it has 10MP, just like your 40D, but the IQ is much higher. Per-pixel sharpness is better, noise at ISO 3200 is much lower, and you can lighten up the shadow areas much more without having them turn into grainy mush. I know - I used to shoot low-light events with a pair of 40Ds. Then I graduated to 1D2 & 1Ds2. Now I'm loving the 1D3 & 1Ds3.

For sports and action shots that you are unable to close enough, I agree 1.3x APS-H gives the best balance of IQ and effective reach. 1D3 maybe old and only has 10mp but it still delivers one of the best skin tone with that creamy look more noticeable than my old 5D1 in certain cases even at ISO 1250. I am sure my 60D cannot match with that IQ, not only natural sharper but in creamy smooth color rendition. 1D4 is still a better option even over 1DX in birding as it has much higher pixel density while still generate excellent IQ till ISO 3200.

My 1D3 copy doesn't have AF issues as you might have seen in many of my airshow photos. I have no regret a bit to choose a lite used 1D3 over a brand new 7D and paid a few hundred more back in Oct '09. Even 1D3 no mention 1D4 is in a diferent league of AF, overall performance and IQ than 7D/XXD.

If I didn't also make large landscape prints, I'd be better off with two 1D3s.

Canon flagship 1D/1Ds series have best low ISO IQ in Canon lineup, cleaner, creamier and much less banding if you pull shadow. After of all, Canon spent the best effort to generate as much good IQ as possible especially in low ISOs. 5D series are more compromised. 5D3 is the best in 5D series that closer to the respective 1D series (1DX in this case) in the same generation.
