I don't understand why you find this funny. Personally, I can't understand why people their 'good' cameras and lenses at home when they go on vacation.

All of my vacations are literally once in a lifetime trips because life is too short to return to the same place twice. Why wouldn't you take your best equipment?

I'm in modest shape so I have no problem carrying my gear aound.

However, I also never take more than I carry on my back all day period. Even when I went to Costa Rica for 3 weeks in the spring everything fit into one backpack that I could shoulder all day.

Totally agree.  While I do apreciate the fact that a pro DLSR with a built in portrait grip at Disney world might be overkill, I do get a chuckle every time I read grown men on this forum talking about how heavy DSLRs are to carry.  As someone who has shot everything from Pentax 67 and Mamiya RB67 to a Sinar F, I find all the "boat anchor" putdowns from the mirrorless crowd odd since the SLR and indeed 135 was designed to be a small, portable camera, which it still is.

Miniaturization at the expense of usability and ergonomics is not a good trend.  Most of the time, I'd rather have a full-sized camera with a good grip, and nice large OVF.  For snapshots though, or street photography, I am a huge fan of a small, fixed lens camera like the Ricoh GRD IV or a GX1 with a 20 1.7 pancake.  That said, I never question people for the gear they carry as it's all about the images and sometimes good images take commitment.
