All of my vacations are literally once in a lifetime trips because life is too short to return to the same place twice. Why wouldn't you take your best equipment?
Becuase the other, light weight equipment takes pictures that are indistinguishable, and the extra DOF is highly desirable in "Disneyland" shots.
Are you claiming the output from a D4 is indistinguishable from a m4/3 camera?
For Disneyland snapshots with deep depth of field in bright daylight printed 4 x 6", maybe 8 x10" at most?
Yes-indistinguishable.
Prehaps he/she wants to take photographs that require more than deep depth of field in daylight?
Depth Of Field isn't the only difference between a D4 and m4/3 camera.
I'm in modest shape so I have no problem carrying my gear aound.
Not everyone is.
Also, you are not in as good shape as you think.
I realize I'm not a superstar. I need to lose ~25 pounds. Many people are in much better shape than myself, but I run 5 km (~3 miles) in under 25 minutes 4 days a week and bench my own body weight.

I believe I have a pretty good handle on my level of fitness since I hit the gym 5 days a week, and get annual medical check-ups.

You're the one who questioned my pyshical conditioning. I didn't go into detail originally because I didn't think it mattered much.
However, I also never take more than I carry on my back all day period. Even when I went to Costa Rica for 3 weeks in the spring everything fit into one backpack that I could shoulder all day.
If you are on a family vacation, you need to carry other stuff on your back, e.g. tired kids!
Doesn't sound like you are every really been on a "family vacation".
I think our ideas of 'family vacation' are just different. Hopefully everyone can agree that shouldn't prompt us to laugh at one another.

I just don't understand why it's ok to laugh at person who wishes to travel with a camera that was an expensive investment.
Because they are makeing a foolish spectacle of themselves.

Yes.
Perhaps you should seek out some counsoling. I'm not an expert in mental health but--to me--this beaviour indicates you have some underlying issues that should be resolved.
At this point I concede we'll never see eye-to-eye on this behaviour.
