I just imagined you walking down a Punta-kana beach and totally agree with you.

At such moment then what is more important : freedom in your hands and shoulders, or an obligation to "register" the beautiful moment with the "best" and heaviest camera ?

You either hold hands with your wife and kids or carry your "cross".

I bet the wife and kids will remember forever that moment you spent together and not the camera you carried with you then.
